Advent-Day 9-Moses

Welcome all.

This month we are learning about God, His son Jesus and Jesus’ earthly family.

The next person in Jesus’ family is Moses. (This story is found in Exodus 12-14 and our lesson can be found here.) Today’s lesson is a VERY abbreviated version of the 1st half of Moses’ story.

Moses has a great story. All the people of Israel were living in a place called Egypt. When he was a baby he was saved from an evil king because his mommy put him in a basket and sent him down the river. The funny thing is, though that the princess found him and he was raised in the king’s own house! When he grew up, he ended up running away and one day God came to him and told him that he needed to lead God’s people out of Egypt and to a special place God had promised them.

Moses didn’t understand why God would choose HIM, but he obeyed. He and his brother Aaron went to the Pharaoh (king) and said, “God says, ‘Let My people go!'” But the Pharah did not let the Israelites (God’s people) go. God sent 10 plagues (bad, yucky things) to happen to the people of Egypt and each time God said, “Let My people go!” and each time the Pharaoh said “no.” Until the last time, when the Pharaoh’s son was killed by God’s angel and finally he let God’s people leave.

But as soon as they all left, he changed his mind and he and his soldiers chased the Israelites. They got to a big river and the people were scared. God told Moses to raise his staff (like a big walking stick) and the water in that river went up up up and made a path for the Israelite’s to cross through! They were all just through when the Pharaoh and his soldiers were coming and as THEY crossed the river, all the water came crashing back down on them. God delivered His people from Egypt and the Pharaoh.

God is our deliverer too. To deliver means to bring. God brings us out of sin and bad choices… He saves us from the consequences of our sin. He is our deliverer. (Psalm 18:2, Romans 11:26)

When Zechariah found out Elizabeth was going to have baby John he couldn’t believe it! He asked the angel, “How do i know this is true?” The angel said, “I am the angel Gabriel who stands before God and He Himself sent me  and now, because you didn’t believe my words….you will not be able to talk until the baby is born!”

Elizabeth had baby John and when it was time to name him, everyone thought he would be named Zechariah like his dad, but John asked to write it down. He said “His name will be John.” (Just like God told him to name him). As soon as he wrote that, Zechariah was able to speak again! Then he sang a song to God, saying, “Praise be to God, He has come to save His people! He will deliver us from our enemies, and this baby John will lead the way and get everyone ready for Jesus! Praise be to God.”

Attribute of God: Deliverer

Jesus’ birth story: Zechariah speaks

Craft:

For side one of our ornament, we cut out two rectangles of blue construction paper and fringed them. Then we bent back the fringed part to look like the rising water. We glued those to an orange construction paper circle.

Our text reads: Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt. God is our deliverer. Ex 12-14, Psalm 18:2, Rom 11:26)

Side two of our ornament is a cut out of Zechariah and we drew on his face and his shouting mouth.

Our text reads: Zechariah speaks! Luke 1
