This month we are learning about God, God’s son Jesus and Jesus’ earthly family tree.
Today we will learn a bit more about Moses. Our complete lesson on Moses and the 10 Commandments can be found here and in Exodus 19-23, and in Deuteronomy 5 in the Bible. (Our lesson today will be an abbreviated version of this story).
So after Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, God led them through the desert to a place called Mount Sinai. There, God called Moses up the mountain and He gave Moses the list of rules all the Israelites should follow. God knows rules help keep us safe. When we follow the rules God gives us, it helps us be more like Him. But can anybody ever follow ALL the rules? No. We all make mistakes sometimes. (Rom 3:23) So the rules also help remind us that we all sin, and that we need God’s forgiveness. The Israelites didn’t always follow the rules either. But God promised He would send a savior (someone to save them) from the forever consequence of death. That person would be God’s son Jesus.
Isaiah 33:22 says, “For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is He who will save us.”
So after Zechariah and Elizabeth had baby John, and Mary and Joseph still had baby Jesus in Mary’s tummy, the king made a rule that everyone had to go back to where they were born and register because he wanted see how many people there were. (Luke 2) Joseph was from Bethlehem (he was part of King David’s family) so he and Mary traveled all the way from Nazareth (where they lived) to Bethlehem. It was probably very uncomfortable for Mary because her tummy was so big. But obeying this law was part of God’s plan for Jesus’ birth story. So Mary and Joseph went and we’ll see soon what happens when they get to Bethlehem.
Bible Story: Moses and the commandments
Attribute of God: Law-Giver
Jesus’ birth story: Traveling to Bethlehem
Side one of our ornament today is an orange circle of construction paper (you can use any color you’d like) and then we cut out two stone tablets like the one Moses brought to the people that had the rules of God written on them.
Our text reads: God gave the Israelites the 10 Commandments. Deut 5:1-22, Is 33:22
Side two of our ornament is another circle and then we cut out some small shapes and drew on them to look like the town of Bethlehem.
Our text reads: Mary and Joseph go to Bethlehem. Luke 2
Our current “family tree”:
Thanks for joining us again. Love to you all!
