God provides another way

Hi all. Today’s lesson is from Genesis 21 and 22. Last year’s lessons can be found HERE and HERE.

Abraham and Sarah were very old but God had promised them many many children! And Sarah did have a baby boy, and she named him Isaac which means “he laughs.” Sarah had laughed when the angels told her she would have a baby and now she knew everyone else would laugh too when they heard someone SO old had had a baby!

Sarah and Abraham LOVED Isaac. He was their very favorite thing in the whole world …they loved nothing more…except for God. God said that Abraham would have as many children and grandchildren and great children as all the stars in the sky…and they would come from Isaac.

One day God asked Abraham to give Isaac back to Him. Isaac would have to die and live in heaven with God, away from Abraham. How do you think that made Abraham feel?

Sad? Scared? Confused?

Do you think Abraham obeyed?

He did. He trusted God. Even though it sounded like a CRAZY thing to do and even though Abraham loved Isaac so so so so much…he trusted God’s plan.

So Abraham took Isaac up a mountain and they were going to give Isaac to God as a sacrifice. A sacrifice is like a present of your best thing. Usually back when Abraham lived, people would kill and give God their best sheep. It was hard for them to give up their best sheep. That sheep would give them lots of money to buy the things they needed…but the people had to trust God most and give up their best to let GOD take care of them.

So instead of a sheep, Abraham was asked to give up HIS best….Isaac.

As they were walking Isaac said, “Dad…where is the sheep for the sacrifice?”

Abraham answered, “God will provide.”

When it came time to give Isaac back to God…God said, “Stop. You don’t have to give Isaac back to Me. I will provide another way.” And then they saw a ram (a boy sheep) and they sacrificed that to God.

God was very happy that Abraham was going to obey Him no matter what…even if it mean giving up his only son. God provided another way.

And do you know that WE are supposed to die forever for our bad choices and sin…but God has provided another way for us? God provided His own son, Jesus. Jesus is sometimes called “the Lamb of God” because HE became the sacrifice for us. (When He died on the cross and took our sin and punishment instead of us having to have the consequence of forever death.)

God has provided another way for us but He had not yet provided a way for Abraham and Isaac but Abraham still trusted Him. We can be sure that a God who loves us enough to send His own son to die in our place, is a God worth trusting and loving.

God’s plan is always best…even if it seems crazy at the time…we can ALWAYS trust Him and know that He loves us no matter what.

 

For our craft today we took paper plates (you could use plain paper) and we drew Abraham and Isaac. Then we glued on toothpicks to be the sacrificial altar (the place the sacrifice was made) and then we glued on a white pom pom to be the sheep.

Sodom and Gomorrah

Hey all. Welcome back! Today’s story is from Genesis 18:16-33 and 19:1-29. Our lesson from last year can be found HERE.

So our friend Abraham was getting ready to move to the next place God told him to go.

God said,  “Abraham will become a great and powerful nation, and everyone else on earth will be blessed through him. I have chosen him, so that he will lead his children and his household to follow Me by doing what is right.”

God then told Abraham about two cities nearby. Sodom and Gomorrah. God told Abraham the cities were very bad and the people did terrible things to sin against God (disobey Him.)

Abraham knew his nephew Lot lived in Sodom and so he asked God: “Will you get rid of the good people just because some of them are wicked? What if there are fifty righteous (right with God) people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not save the place for the sake of the fifty good people in it?

The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will save the whole place for their sake.”

Then Abraham spoke up again: “What if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”

Once again Abraham spoke to Him, “What if only forty are found there?”

He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”

He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

****Abraham knew God would do what He wanted…and he knew it was a bold thing to ask God to save the city. We know we can talk to God anytime and ask Him anything…even if it seems crazy because we know NOTHING is too hard for God. But like Abraham, we must also remember God is in charge. Abraham was talking to God on behalf of the people of Sodom–he was interceding…that means to come between and negotiate…or to come between and bring peace between two people. Abraham was trying to help save the people. Can you think of anyone else in the Bible who intercedes? Someone who talks to God for US?

Jesus! Jesus talks to God for us and we can also talk to God for other people. When we pray for our friends who are sick or sad…or when we pray that they come to know Jesus that is interceding…we are coming to God FOR them, to ask God to help them, just like Abraham did for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.****

Now let’s get back to the story….

Two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot (Abraham’s nephew) was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “please come to my house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the middle of the city.”

But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him to his house. He made a meal for them and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They tried to do very bad and mean things to Lot and his family. Lot even made a bad choice and said “Don’t hurt me or my visitors! Here take my daughters instead!” Isn’t that a terrible thing to say??

But the angels saved Lot AND his daughters. God was merciful (nice even when they didn’t deserve it) to Lot and his family. He saved them because of his promise and love for  Abraham…not because they deserved to be saved. Then the angels said “Do you have anyone else here in the city who belongs to you? Any family? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The people here are so bad that God has sent us to destroy it.”

So Lot went out and told his family, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking and they didn’t go.

When the sun was about to come up, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

When he hesitated, the angels took his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city. As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! DON’T look back, and DON’T stop anywhere on the way! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. (THIS is a video of what burning sulfur in a volcano looks like). The whole city, all the people animals and plants were destroyed. But Lot’s wife didn’t obey the angels and she looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. God had told them not to look back. He wanted them to obey Him. When it says she became a pillar of salt that could mean she was covered in the ashes from the sulfur and died, or that the burning sulfur overtook her…she didn’t obey and move fast enough. When God gives us clear directions, we should always obey Him, and keep our focus on Him…not on what we are leaving behind. God’s way is ALWAYS the best way.

Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. He looked down at Sodom and Gomorrah, and he saw the smoke from the land, like smoke from a furnace. When God destroyed the cities, he remembered Abraham and kept him safe, and he saved Lot and his family too.

 

In this lesson we learn the importance of obeying God and putting Him first..not thinking about other things that might seem better (like Lot’s wife who was so sad about leaving she disobeyed God). We can always remember God’s way is the BEST way. We also learned about God’s favor toward Abraham and how Abraham used that favor to help others. He KNEW God and talked to Him to try to help the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. When we love God and follow Him the Bible says we become God’s children and can come to Him anytime. (Hebrews 4:16) We should always remember to come to God to intercede for others–we can pray to God for the things we need, but like Abraham, we can pray for other people too. Jesus does that for us. (Hebrews 7:25) In everything we do, we try to be more like Jesus and when we pray for other people we are bringing them before God, just like Jesus does for us.

God’s Promise to Abram

Hi all! Today’s lesson is from Genesis 15 and 18. Last year’s lessons can be found HERE and HERE. (This is a much simpler version of our two stories from last year…so this may be better for smaller toddlers/preschoolers whereas last year could be better for slightly older preschoolers/kids.)

So Abram and Sarai were very very old and wanted to have children…but they thought they were too old. One day God told Abram he WOULD have many many children and grandchildren…as many as the stars in the sky!

Have you ever looked out at night time and tried to count all the stars? It’s a LOT!

Abram believed God and God gave him a new name: Abraham: which means “father to many.” He also gave Sarai a new name: Sarah. Sarai means quarrelsome…like fighting a lot. Sarah means princess.

Sarah laughed when she found out God’s plan. She couldn’t believe that SHE could have a baby being so old?! But NOTHING is too hard for God. You can be sure God DID keep His promise to Abraham and Sarah.

We can always trust God. He can do ANYTHING. Nothing is too hard for God.

For our craft today we cut sponges in star shapes. Then we dipped them in glue and stamped black pieces of paper with the glue and then added glitter to represent the stars in the sky.

Abram Sets Out

Hello again! Today’s story is from Genesis 11:27-12:9.

So 10 generations after Noah (Noah had a son, who had a son, who had a son, who had a son….10 times down the line), was born a man named Abram.

Abram had a wife named Sarai and a nephew (his brother’s son) named Lot. Abram and Sarai didn’t have any children yet but they really wanted to have a baby. We don’t know much else about Abram except that he was pretty old and that he followed God.

One day God spoke to Abram and said “Go! Leave your house, your country, the people you know and head out and later I will show you where you are going.”

Doesn’t that sound crazy? To just start moving but not even know WHERE you are going?

Then God gave Abram a promise, He said, ““I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” A blessing is like approval that helps you. That means people would like Abram and God would be good to him. Anyone who was good to Abram, God would be good to them. Anyone who was mean to Abram…God would not be nice to them. And everyone on earth would be blessed because of Abram.

So Abram obeyed. He went with his wife and his nephew and took their things and some of their helpers and they set out.

Abram didn’t know where he was going…but he knew WHO told him to go. He trusted God. Sometimes we might not understand what God is doing in our lives…but we know we can trust Him. We can always trust God that He has a good plan for us. It might not always be easy (and it wasn’t for Abram either)…but we know we can trust God no matter what.

For our story today we told the story using legos. (So…our caravan was a fire truck and a pumpkin carriage haha, but they enjoyed telling the story themselves).

Tower of Babel

Welcome back! Today’s lesson is from Genesis 11. Last year’s lesson can be found HERE.

So after Noah’s family got off the ark, they had a lot of kids and those kids had kids and those kids had kids and before long, there were a lot of people on the earth again. And…those people already started to forget about God…AGAIN. They thought they didn’t need God. They thought they were as smart and strong as God.

So…they decided because they were so smart and so skilled that they could build a big tower up to heaven and everyone forever would think “Wow! That’s an amazing tower! Those people must be GREAT!”

Instead of using their brains and bodies to do work for GOD, they wanted to build a big tower just for themselves, to show how great THEY were.

So…God knew this was not a good choice and He made them start talking in different languages. The people had so much trouble understanding each other they had to stop building.

Everyone who understood each other lived together in one group…and another group of people who understood each other lived in a different group…each group of people went off to live with just the people they could understand. God needed the people to trust HIM, not themselves.

Sometimes God lets confusing things happen. When you don’t understand something, you can always talk to God about it. God wanted the people to change their hearts and do things for Him….so when confusing or scary things happen, we can always remember to make sure our hearts are following God and He will help us. We can’t do anything without God, just like the people at Babel learned.

For today’s activity, we built and knocked down some towers. We also talked about how we need God and how we can honor Him with the choices we make, and not try to honor ourselves.

Noah

Welcome back! Today’s lesson is from Genesis 6-9 and last year’s lesson and crafts can be found HERE.

Adam and Eve had their children, and they had children and those children had children and soon, the earth was a pretty busy place! BUT the people forgot to obey God–they did whatever they wanted. This made God very sad, and He decided it was time to start over. ALL the people had to go.

But, there was one man named Noah who obeyed God. God came to Noah and told him to build an ark (like a REALLY big boat). God told Noah exactly how to build it…He gave Noah all the measurements and directions. God ALWAYS has a plan. He told Noah to bring one mommy and one daddy of each kind of animal. For some of the animals, God said to bring 7 daddies and 7 mommies. Then God also told Noah to take every kind of food on the ark with them. (Some for the animals and some for them to grow later).

God warned Noah that it would rain for 40 days and 40 nights. Noah and his wife, and their three boys and the boys’ wives all got on the ark and then it rained and rained and rained….over the WHOLE earth. The Bible says even the highest mountains were covered in water…all the people who disobeyed God were washed away, but Noah and his family (who loved and obeyed God) stayed nice and dry in the ark on top of the water.

The Bible says the earth was flooded for 150 days! (That’s almost half a year!) God sent a big wind and the waters went down. Noah sent out a bird to look for a place to live, but it flew right back (there was no where for it to land.) So Noah waited and then sent out a dove, but it also came back with nothing. He waited a week and sent the dove out again and this time it came back with a branch from an olive tree (that meant there were *some* dry spots, but not enough to leave the ark yet). He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again and this time, the dove didn’t come back (he had found ground or a tree to live in). Noah knew that meant everything was dry enough for them to leave the ark.

God told Noah and his family, it was time to come out!

Noah gave God some of the best animals, and it made God happy. God made another covenant (a promise) with Noah and said “I will never flood the whole earth again. And I will give you a reminder. Every time you see a rainbow (when the sun and rain mix), you can remember this promise that I will never again destroy everything with water.”

 

For our craft today we made an ark. We used a blue background and cut out our ark shape on brown construction paper. Then, we clipped pictures of animals from magazines and glued those onto our ark. Then we used the rest of the brown paper to make windows so we could peek in and see the animals. (You could also just cut away the ark to make windows…but that proved too tricky for 4 year olds…so we just taped windows on.)

Cain and Abel

Welcome back! Today’s lesson is from Genesis 4. (Last year’s lesson and craft can be found HERE).

Adam and Eve had two sons. Cain worked in the field. He grew vegetables. It was hard work. Abel looked after the sheep. He was a shepherd. As the boys grew, they each decided to give God an offering (like a present). Cain picked some of the food he’d grown and brought it to God. But Abel brought his BEST sheep…the best he had and brought that to God. God was very happy with Abel’s gift. But He was not so happy with Cain’s gift. This made Cain mad. He was jealous that God liked Abel’s present better. So he got a very bad idea. He tricked Abel and took him far into the field and he killed him.

Then God came and asked Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“How should I know?!” answered Cain. “Am I my brother’s keeper? Am I in charge of him?”

But God knew exactly what Cain had done. We know when we disobey God that there will be consequences. We can not lie to God. He always knows what really happened–don’t try to trick God. And God told Cain, “Now you have bad consequences. You did not bring Me your best, you killed your brother AND you tried to lie about it. From now on, you will just wander around…and you will try to work and grow more food, but you will not be able to grow any.”

This made Cain very sad, but God promised even though he would no longer be able to grow food, that He would protect him and no one would hurt him. Even though God gave Cain a consequence, He still loved him and took care for him.

 

In this story we learn it’s important to give God our best. Abel WANTED to give God the best sheep he had. You probably don’t have any sheep to give God, right? But you can give God your time by praying and reading your Bible. You can use your talents (like singing, drawing, playing sports or music) to be loving to others, to praise Him and teach other people about Him. You can give God your money–to help your church or to help someone in need. These are just some of the ways we can give God our best. We don’t just give Him our leftovers…maybe a couple minutes here or there. Or just worship God on Sunday–we want to put God first ALWAYS.

Regular study of God’s word keeps His truths in their hearts and builds a good foundation of daily seeking God. It also helps US as parents ensure WE are seeking God every day. Some days may seem to go over your child’s head…and that’s ok. You can always modify a lesson to be more or less complex, but also trust that the truths you speak will sink into their hearts. God WANTS children to come to Him and to know Him and you may be surprised how much He helps them understand and remember and how much insight He gives them. Thanks for joining us this year!

Adam and Eve

Hi all! Welcome back…today’s lesson is from Genesis 2 and 3. Last year’s lesson and craft can be found HERE.

Yesterday we learned about God creating everything and on His last day of work, He created man. The Bible says God said “Let us make man in OUR own image.” (the Father, son and Holy Spirit–isn’t it great to know God made us like Himself??) God took some dirt from the ground and made man from the dirt. God breathed into his nose and gave him life. He put the man in charge of everything else He had made–which meant man could name everything and be in charge, but also that he needed to take care of everything. God named the man Adam.

God knew it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone so he put Adam to sleep and took one of his ribs (the bones near your heart) and from that bone He made a woman, named Eve. (Isn’t that kind of a silly way to make people? It kind of seems funny…but God knew exactly what He was doing!) Adam and Eve would be partners, and work together and keep each other company.

God had made a perfect garden for Adam and Eve to live in. Only perfect things were there and it was wonderful with no sadness or fear or anything yucky. In the middle of the garden were two trees–the tree of Life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God said Adam and Eve could eat any of the food in the garden EXCEPT for the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. “If you eat from that tree, you will die,” God told them.

One day, a serpent (a snake) came to Eve and said “Did God REALLY say you can’t eat from any tree in this garden?”

“Oh! We can eat from ANY tree–except THAT one…if we eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God says we’ll die!”

“Really?” said the snake. “You won’t REALLY die! God just knows if you eat the fruit from THAT tree that you’ll be as smart as He is and you’ll know what’s good and evil…He just doesn’t want you to be as smart as Him. Really…it’s ok. You can eat the fruit.”

The snake lied. God DID tell them they would die if they ate the fruit. But Eve didn’t listen to God. She listened to the snake. She disobeyed God. That’s called sin. It was the first time someone sinned. And then she got Adam to eat some too..he sinned too. God knew right away.

When they ate the fruit, Adam and Eve DID suddenly know the difference between good and bad and they KNEW they had done something bad. So they tried to hide from God…but of course you can’t hide from God. He found them.

God knew they had to leave the garden. Now that they had sinned and knew good from bad, they couldn’t stay and eat from the tree of life–they couldn’t live forever, because they were no longer perfect and God never wanted people to live forever in their yucky sin. So He came to them and told them they couldn’t stay in the garden anymore. They had to leave and they would have to work hard now to get their food. And they would be away from God.

Adam and Eve left the garden and began a much harder life away from God…but God was always watching, always providing and He had a plan. HE, perfect God, would provide a way for Adam and Eve (and all of us who sin) to come back to Him and live forever. He would send His son Jesus to be a man like us and die INSTEAD of us. Jesus would be perfect and able to give us the fruit from the tree of life. He would take our consequence of dying and instead, give us back to God to live forever. ISN’T THAT WONDERFUL?!

 

For our craft today, we made puppets! We used three socks, some tacky glue (you could also use hot glue or super glue), some googly eyes and some old ribbons (but get as creative as you like!)

We made an Adam, an Eve, and a snake. Then we took turns being the characters and retelling the story.

Hello all! Welcome!

Today’s lesson is from Genesis 1-2:2.

Today we made a book. To see our craft from last year see HERE.

So we started by using a big dinner plate and some 12 x 12 card stock. (You could also use a smaller plate and some construction paper. Yours doesn’t even have to be a circle book, it could be regular paper. The front of our book says “Creation Book, Genesis 1” (not pictured). We used a hold punch and some ring clips to hold our book together but you could use string to tie it together or just staple the pages if you like. (You can purchase ring clips at office supply stores or Amazon.)

For our books, we can sing them to the tune of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”

For the first page we traced our plate on a white and black piece of paper and cut them each in half. Then we taped the 1/2 together. On the back of our cover page we wrote “On the first day of creation God made: DARKNESS and LIGHT and God saw that IT WAS GOOD.”

For the next day we took a piece of light blue paper and scribbled some clouds (our white wasn’t showing up, so we made blue clouds.) You could also paint or use cotton balls for your clouds. We used tissue paper scraps for our water. Again, you could use any material you like to be the water.

Our text is now written on the back of the darkness and light page and it reads “On the second day of creation God made: WATER and SKY”

So for our song we sing, “On the second day of creation God made: WATER and SKY, *flip back to first page* DARKNESS and LIGHT, and God saw that it was GOOD.

The next page we used a blue circle and some green patterned paper (which is showing up yellow in the picture). Then we took some popsicle sticks to be trees and I had some Hawaiian flowers from an old lei. You could also just color on some trees and flowers, or use some from your yard.

Our text/song here goes “On the third day of creation God made: LAND and PLANTS, *back to page 2* WATER and SKY, *back to page 1* DARKNESS and LIGHT, and God saw that it was GOOD.”IMG_6278

Next is day 4. We used dark blue paper and glue with glitter to make some shimmery galaxies. I also had some sticky-backed foam stars which you can get at any craft store. I think mine were from Hobby Lobby.

Now the song goes: “On the fourth day of creation God made: SUN, MOON, and STARS, LAND and PLANTS, WATER and SKY, DARKNESS and LIGHT, and God saw that it was GOOD.”

For the next day we took two pieces of colored paper (for this you can use any color you’d like–we chose purple and orange to spice things up). We did the top half in feathers and the bottom half in scales. I had these foam handprints that we layered to make fish scales, but you could use tissue paper, any kind of small circles, some goldfish crackers, or just draw some fish and birds if you like.

Now the text/song says: “On the fifth day of creation, God made: BIRDS and FISH, SUN, MOON, and STARS, LAND and PLANTS, WATER and SKY, DARKNESS and LIGHT, and God saw that it was GOOD.”

For the next day we just took a yellow piece of paper (you could use brown, pink, or whatever color you like) and added some googly eyes and then drew the rest of the facial features on. You could also add some yarn or ribbon for hair.

Now if we read our book, flipping back for each page, it says, “On the sixth day of creation, God made: ANIMALS and PEOPLE, BIRDS and FISH, SUN, MOON, and STARS, LAND and PLANTS, WATER and SKY, DARKNESS and LIGHT, and God saw that it was GOOD.”

Almost there! For the seventh day we just drew some sleepy Zzzzzzzs. You could draw someone sleeping, cut pictures from a magazine of someone sleeping…maybe even print out a picture of YOUR child sleeping.

The song continues: “On the seventh day of creation God took a REST, He made ANIMALS and PEOPLE, BIRDS and FISH, SUN, MOON, and STARS, LAND and PLANTS, WATER and SKY, DARKNESS and LIGHT, and God saw that it was GOOD.”

Lastly, we added a back to our book and on that page we added an extra “And God saw that IT WAS GOOD!”

It’s a really craft-heavy lesson, but the kids enjoyed making these books and singing the song all afternoon so I think it will be a great way to remember all the wonderful things God made.
