Jesus heals a deaf man

Hi all! This story today is from Mark 7:31-37. This is another miracle Jesus did. Remember a miracle is something only God can do. (Sometimes He uses people like Jesus or the disciples or maybe even you to do the miracle…but it is ALWAYS God’s power).

One day Jesus was traveling to a new place and some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk (because it’s hard to know how to talk when you can’t hear other people talking), and they begged Jesus to help him get better. “Please please please!” they said.

Jesus took him aside, away from the crowd, then He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Be opened!” Right away the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak! 

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more He told them not to, the more they kept talking about it! People were overwhelmed with amazement. “Everything He does is AMAZING!!” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

The people were supposed to not make a big deal of it…but they couldn’t help it! They were so amazed by what Jesus had done, they just HAD to tell people. The man had his ears and tongue opened so he could hear and speak, but those watching had their minds and hearts opened–they could see now that Jesus was someone special…God’s son, the Messiah, the One who had come to save them not just from being sick or deaf, but Jesus had come to save their hearts.

 

For our craft today, we cut out a face shape and then made an upside down U cut out. (It serves as a flap so you can open and shut the mouth). We cut a strip of red paper and folded it up accordion style and glued in down inside the U.

Our text reads: “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!” Mark 7:31-37

Welcome back! We took a week off for vacation Bible school and illness (whomp whomp), but will be finishing our lessons from the New Testament about leading a Godly life this week, then in July we’re back to Genesis! (We go through the Bible every year–repetition is good but also the word of God is alive and new every time we read!)

Today’s lesson is from 1 John 3 (and Romans 8).

Do you have a mommy or daddy that loves you very much? Do you know what the Bible says? It says God wants to be our Father! In 1 John 3, John reminds us that God loves us SOOO much He calls us His children!

Let’s think about that for a minute. What does your dad (or mom) do to show you they love you? God isn’t like a boss just telling us what to do, and He isn’t some scary guy up in the sky. He is like a Father. Like a daddy. Which means He loves you! He protects you, He knows all your favorite things. He knows how you feel and He knows what you need. He even knows how many hairs are on your head! He knows how to take care of you and He would do ANYTHING for you…even die for you!

In Ephesians 1 and Romans 8 the Bible talks about God adopting us. Do you know what adoption is? Adoption is when someone who wasn’t born in your family, becomes a kid in your family forever. Your mom and dad usually have to sign a lot of papers and tell a judge that they promise to take care of them and love them forever no matter what (just like they love and care for you no matter what).

The Bible says that when we accept Jesus and ask Him in our hearts that we get adopted too! God writes our name down–we get “marked” with the Holy Spirit–and that makes us God’s children FOREVER. We are now His children…just like Jesus is God’s son…we become is kids too! And that means that we get to live in God’s house (heaven) and be with Him forever and share in all the wonderful things He has made! Not only will He love us and help us here, but when we will get to be with Him forever in a perfect place and share in His treasures forever.

**If your mom or dad haven’t been very good examples of loving you, you can be sure God is NOT like that. He is the perfect example of a loving, good Father. Sometimes that means He lets us go through hard things. And sometimes He has to teach us things…but He is always good…He always loves us and He will never give up on you.

 

For our craft today we drew pictures of our Father God and us together. (Again, child produced art helps them think about what THEY think God looks like. Besides all the good brain stuff and fine motor practice, it helps them take time to identify how they perceive God and their relationship with Him.)

What is true?

Welcome back! Today’s lesson is from 1 John chapters 2 and 4.

What do you know that’s true? How about that your mom and dad love you. But how can you tell if something is true about God? Nobody on earth has SEEN God…so how can you know if someone says “God is 1 inch tall” or “God can’t do everything.”

How do you know if something is true or not? In the book of 1 John (John’s 1st letter) it says that we can know something is true if we check the Bible! We know God ALWAYS tells the truth, and the Bible is everything He wanted us to know. We can know if something is true by checking the Bible.

In this book, John also tells us to watch out. Some people will SAY they love God…but they might say some things that don’t SOUND like God…like maybe they would say “God loves you….IF you wear a certain kind of clothes. Or God only loves you IF you eat certain food.” If you aren’t sure if that’s true or not…you can check the Bible! (You can always ask a grown up to help).

AND, if anyone teaches about God, but doesn’t accept Jesus too, the Bible says that person is a liar who doesn’t really know God. When we love God, we love Jesus too. Jesus is God’s son, sent to save us from our sins. If we don’t believe in Jesus, then we don’t believe in God’s love…and God IS love! Anyone who teaches about God, but doesn’t believe in Jesus too is not someone who tells the truth.

If we want to know what is true about God, we can read the Bible. 1 John 4 says lots of people will try to tell you things that God doesn’t like. They sound really good…but they are not of God. Everything you hear, make sure God says it too. If you don’t know what to do, or if you should agree with someone or not…check the Bible! God gave us what He wants us to know in the Bible.

 

For our craft today we used 1/2 piece black construction paper, some slightly smaller sheets of white paper and a yellow piece of paper with a ‘V’  cut out of the end. We glued down the center of the black piece and added a white piece, then glued and layered another white piece, then glued and layered our yellow bookmark piece.

True Beauty

Welcome back!

Today’s lesson is from 1 Peter 3:3-4, written by Jesus’ friend Peter.

In these verses Peter tells us what makes someone beautiful. What do you think makes someone beautiful? Pretty hair? Make up? Fancy clothes?

The Bible says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

That means it doesn’t matter WHAT the outside of you looks like. What matters is your heart. If you love God and other people THAT is the most beautiful thing. A gentle and quiet (that means not afraid…but trusting God) heart.

Can you wear jewelry? Sure. Can you do your hair in fun ways? Of course. Can you wear the latest, coolest clothes? Yeah. But what really matters is if you make good choices to love other people and trust God. That’s what REALLY makes someone beautiful. (Bigger kids may enjoy the story of Esther to further illustrate true beauty–there’s a veggie tales version as well for the younger crowd.)

In the book of Proverbs (wise sayings) 11:22 it says, “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.” That means if you put jewelry on pig….it would still be a muddy ugly pig. You can try to make the pig look fancy…but it’s still a pig. And when people make ugly choices, they look no better than that muddy ugly pig. You can have fancy clothes and jewelry all you want…but if your heart is ugly, it’s not real beauty. Real beauty is trusting God and loving others.

For our craft today we made some pigs with gold rings in their noses.

I had the kids cut out the shapes above (a circle and two triangles). Then we glued the triangles near the top of the circle to be the ears. We drew on eyes and glued a pom pom for the snout.

Then we twisted a pipe cleaner and taped it to the back to be the tail. Lastly, we took a gold piece of ribbon and glued it on to be the nose ring.

Controlling your tongue

Hi all! Welcome back…this lesson is from James 3.

HERE is our lesson from last year.

Do you know what self-control is? It’s when you can control yourself…when you can make good choices on your own. Do you know what the hardest part of your body to control is? The Bible says it is our tongue. (The words we say.)

When we get angry or sad, it is really easy to say mean, angry things…and hard to wait and NOT say something. When we use our words, we can make someone feel better, or feel sad.
Using our words to be nice to other people is one way to show God’s love. But sometimes we sing songs for God, and then later say mean things to our parents, sister, brother or friend. We can’t use our mouth and tongue to say “I love you God!” but then use our mouth in a way that DOESN’T show God’s love.

But God will help us! When we ask Him, He will help us use our tongues in a nice way–using nice words that bring people closer to God; words that make people feel better, not sad.

Do you know if you light a match it can start a great BIG fire?! If you use your tongue to tell a lie, sometimes that leads to more lies and more people get hurt or in trouble and before long, it’s like a big big fire too–lots of people being sad and in trouble, because you said one little lie.

The things we say last a long time. Have you ever had someone say something mean to you? You still remember that don’t you? When we use mean words with other people, it stays with them. That sadness stays with them. That’s not very loving is it?

The more time we spend reading the Bible and talking to God, the better we will be at using loving words and controlling our tongues. The Bible says no one can be perfect, but God will help us have self-control over our words.
So next time you feel angry, or scared and want to lie, or sad and want to say something mean.. you can take a break…ask God to help you use loving words, and control your tongue.

For our craft today we rounded up a paper plate, some googly eyes, a long strip of crepe paper and two strips of construction paper.

We folded the paper plate in half, glued the eyes on top and stapled the strips to the bottom and top. Then we glued just the end of the crepe paper strip on the inside of the paper plate and it made a face with a loooooooong tongue.

The construction paper becomes the handles for our hands to make a puppet.

You can stuff the tongue into the face and then open the mouth and the long tongue falls out!

Favoritism

Hi all! Welcome! This lesson is from James 2.

Let’s close our eyes and pretend for a minute. A boy was having a party. And someone very fancy looking and rich came to the party and someone very dirty and poor came to the party. The boy told the rich person “Ooh! You come sit right up here by me.” But to the poor person he said, “Ew. You can just sit on the floor.”

What do you think about that? Does that seem like God’s love?

I don’t think so. God tells us to love everyone like God loves us. God doesn’t care if we have a lot of money or not much money at all. He cares about what’s in our heart…and we should care about other peoples’ hearts…not just their money or fancy clothes or fun toys.

In James 2, God tells us that acting like that is not what He wants us to do. Do you know that sometimes people who have a lot of money think they don’t need God? And people who don’t have any clothes or money…sometimes they love God more because they know they need Him. Sometimes people who have less clothes and food are better about sharing than people who have a lot of stuff.

When we are nice to some people, but not other people it’s called favoritism (like having a favorite). And you will have some friends that you see a lot that might be your best friends, but that doesn’t mean you are nicer to them than everybody else.

If we are really loving other people like God loves us, we will love people for their heart…and NOT worry about if they have cool toys or video games or fancy clothes.

Do you know that sometimes grown ups and kids don’t want to be friends with someone if they have different skin color? Sometimes kids are mean to other kids who use a wheelchair or glasses. If we are loving like God loves us, we will try to be friends with everyone, even if they are different than us. (Because can I tell you a secret? EVERYONE is different than you! God did that on purpose! No one on earth is just. like. you. There is only ONE you! God made you special and He loves you…and He loves everyone who is different than you too.)

So if you see a kid who seems different than you some way, that’s no reason to not be nice to them. When we love like God, we don’t show favoritism, instead we show love and are a nice friend to EVERYONE.

 

For our craft today, we cut out two hearts. On the one heart, we drew a fancy person on one side and a poor person on the other side. Then we added some sparkl-ies to the rich person and rags to the poor person.

On the other heart we wrote James 2 and stapled it down the center to the bottom heart (so each side open us underneath).

Then we opened it up and wrote on the backside of the top heart: “Do not show favoritism”

Discipline

Hi all! Welcome back!

Today’s lesson is from Hebrews 12. The word of the day is discipline. Do you know what discipline means? It means training someone. Do you remember Jesus’ disciples? They were training to be like Jesus! And when we follow God, we become His disciples too !We are always becoming more and more like Him.

This takes discipline. He teaches us. And sometimes…it can be hard.

What kinds of rules do you have at your house?

What are the consequences if you break the rules?

Do you know WHY your mom and dad (or grandma or grandpa) have rules at your house?

The rules are there to keep you safe and help you become the kind of person you should be. Do you know any babies? They don’t know how to make good choices yet, do they? But you’re getting bigger every day and YOU know how to make good choices. The choices we make everyday make us more like God…or not. And sometimes when we make choices that are NOT Godly, God has to teach us, sometimes even punish us with consequences.

In Hebrews 12 in the Bible, it says God is like a daddy to us. He wants us to be safe and be more like Him every day. So He teaches us (through the Bible and our own mom and dad) how to be like Him…which choices to make or which choices NOT to make.

But when we do make bad choices and God has to give us consequences, it says, don’t be discouraged (that means don’t be too sad), because you can remember that God LOVES you and is teaching you how to be more like Him.

If God didn’t care, He would just let us do whatever we want. But God cares about you. The Bible says that when we follow God, we become His sons and daughters, His children, and He loves us and teaches us like His children. Have you ever thought about saying “thank you” to your mom and dad when you are punished? No! That seems silly doesn’t it?! But really, we SHOULD say thank you, because we know our parents are keeping us safe and teaching us how to make good choices.

It might not be fun at the time to have to obey our parents, or to obey God, and it’s never fun to have bad consequences, but we can always remember that God is teaching us how to be more like Him…perfect and loving, just like Him.

(And if your dad is not the best example of being loving or being a good teacher, then you can always remember that God is NOT like that. He cares about you, He loves you and He can show you what a REAL father should be like.)

In Proverbs 3:11-12 it says, “My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child whom he loves.”

There is THIS SONG from Chris Tomlin that reminds us that God is good Father to us.

Faith

Hello again! Our lesson today is from Hebrews 11 and it’s about Faith.

(Our lesson and craft from last year can be found HERE).

In Hebrews 11 it says that “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we can not see.”

We hope that God will forgive our sins and give us forever life with Him. We can not see God or Jesus today. But, when we have FAITH, we KNOW God forgives us (because of Jesus) and we believe in Him even though we can not see God.

Sometimes it can seem scary or strange to believe something you can’t see, but in Hebrews, God reminds us of a lot of people who had faith and that God DID just what He said He would. We can trust and believe God.

He reminds us of Noah who built the big boat, called an ark, when God told him to and how he and his whole family were safe because they obeyed God.

He reminds us about Abraham, who left his home and followed God and believed God when God said he would have many many children even though he was already super old. (And he did have many many MANY children!)

There was Moses, who led God’s people away from the angry Pharaoh. And He prayed to God and God gave the people food.

And Joshua who led God’s people around the city of Jericho and they blew their trumpets and the walls fell down–those seem like silly instructions, but Joshua believed in God and obeyed and God provided for them and the walls DID fall down.

There are so so many more! Can you think of someone in the Bible who had faith in God? (Jonah, Isaac, Jacob, Ruth, Esther, David, Daniel). You can read Hebrews 11 to see all the others listed too.

When we believe in God, even though we can’t see Him that’s called……Faith!

We can be SURE that God’s promises are true and that we can always always trust in Him, even if we can’t see Him with our eyes.

Is there a time in YOUR life when you had to trust God? Is there a time when believing in God was hard? (Ask your parents to answer too). What is your favorite promise of God’s to remember?

 

For our craft today, I had the kids pick their favorite story of faith and draw a picture of it. Then we added googly eyes (sine faith is about seeing God with ur hearts, not our eyes) to the main character and today’s verse.
